RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of entry passages providing entry to the facility... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
