Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to challenge certain calls from the official, mirroring the practice currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
